My alarm was set for 8, but I was up by 7 in the morning. The morning chores and breakfast were done and still there were 2 hours left for me to leave for the office. I was early than usual and as I was getting ready I could recall the excitement and apprehensions I had on my first day at work. That day I wore a blue shirt, the one that I wore for the interview too and got selected. Somehow, I felt that it was lucky. Moving from Bombay to the mountains, it was not just a job switch but also a life switch. And the feelings of the day remain afresh.
Seven years down the line, similar feelings surround me as I prepare myself to welcome onboard new joinees on the first day of their work! Standing at the other side of the court it can be a daunting task to find the right people as we build a team. We always spend a lot of time and energy building a team and the first day of work is always important!

What is the First Day of Work?
The first day of work brings opportunities and challenges for both employee and employer. The employees are trying to understand the organisation, the way it works, their job role and how they try to figure out a place for themselves. On the other hand, the purpose of the first day of work for a company is to provide an opportunity for new employees to learn the company’s culture and the job responsibilities. In some cases, the first day of work may also be used as an introductory meeting between new employees and their supervisor
How to Start a New Employees First Day?
The first day of your new employees’ employment can be a crucial time for orientation and preparation. You want them to feel comfortable and at home in the company. To help them get started, start by orienting them to the company and its culture. As well as to acquaint them with their job responsibilities and the workweek.
Company and the New Employee
Remember that you have a good understanding of your company and its goals before starting your new employee on their first day. Discuss about the company's history, culture and what makes it different from other companies, and what kind of career opportunities are available to them. This will help you build a better foundation for the relationship you hope to have with your newest employee over time.
Use the First Day to Build Bonds with the Employee
Be personalised and ensure that you use the first day of your employee’s employment as an opportunity to build relationships with each individual worker. Whether it’s discussing upcoming projects or just catching up on emails, do something that shows you care about these employees and want them working for your company in the long term.
Be Prepared
Preparation is key for a successful first day. Make sure you have everything you need in their onboarding process. Be clear about the conversation you will be having with your employees so that they feel supported and welcomed. Introduce them with the team and set the expectations right. Try to understand their expectations from the team and company so that everyone is at the same pace. Be open and approachable to build a great place to work.
Have a Positive First Day Experience
Make sure the first day of an employee is as positive as possible. Show them that you are equally excited about starting work with them. Ensure that you want to be helpful in every way possible to make sure everyone in the office feels welcomed. Try to have brief discussion at the end of the day to know about their experiences and plan the coming days accordingly.
Conclusion
Starting a new employee's first day can be an important and rewarding experience. By getting to know your company, using the first day to build bonds with the employee, and making sure the First Day is a success, you'll be well on your way to creating a successful workplace. Everyone remembers what their first day feels like and that is how an employee associates with the Company. Make sure you make it memorable for others!
