What are the Best Practices of User Onboarding?

Yesterday, I joined Swimming for the first time. It is something that I have been planning since years, but having no idea about the area, I never went for it. But this time despite having lots of apprehensions I grabbed my bag of swimwear and went to signup. Apart from my fears, I was very lost, with the entire procedure of taking the admission. From entering the Club to filling the form and going into the pool, it felt no different than the first day of school. Luckily, I was guided by friend who was by my side assisting me at every step.
Later that day, I was reading about User Onboarding and I realised that I had not had my friend along with me to join the class, I might have just taken the admission form or must have felt intimidated and returned.
Indeed User Onboarding is a critical process. A user comes up with different expectations and frame of mind and for businesses it is important to guide new users and customers through the initial stages of their journey, helping them understand the value of a product or service and encouraging long-term engagement. We often give up in our initial steps, sometimes we get confused and sometimes we are unable to find what we are looking for. Hence it is important to keep certain things in mind while designing the User Onboarding Process.

Best Practices of User Onboarding

Start Simple

When a new user comes in, he is still figuring out the process and looking for value for which he signed up. Design the onboarding process to be straightforward and easy to understand. Overwhelming users with too much information or complex steps will make them confused. Focus on key features and benefits that will provide immediate value.

Always welcome your users

To get new users started on the right foot, greet them with a friendly message that shows you care. Tell them what your product or service does and how it can help them. Don't forget to highlight the most important benefits they'll get from using it.

Be Interactive

I would have run away from the changing room, had I not had some warm gestures with my fellow mates. Likewise, use interactive tutorials or guides to help users navigate through the product or service. Provide step-by-step instructions and highlight key features. Allow users to interact with the product and learn by doing.

Show value early

We always look for the “Aha” moment. It is important that you tell the value of your product or service as quickly as possible. Offer a quick win or showcase a core feature that solves a common problem for users. This helps to engage users and keeps them motivated to explore further.

Personalize the experience

Tailor the onboarding process to the individual user whenever possible. Collect relevant information during the signup process and use it to provide personalized recommendations, tips, or content. Everyone loves an experience designed just for them!

Go Step by Step

Rushing too much of information will add no good. Go step by step and gradually introduce advanced features and additional information as users become more comfortable with the basics. This will allow users to learn at their own pace.

Provide contextual help and tooltips

You know it well, where your product is little complicated and the user might get lost. Therefore, offer contextual help within the product interface. Use tooltips or guided tours to provide relevant information at the right time. This helps users understand features and functionality without having to search for answers.

Use visual cues and Gamification

Sometimes words can be confusing, so incorporate visual cues, progress indicators, or gamified elements to make the onboarding process more engaging and will help to understand things visually.

Offer Support

User Onboarding is never complete, make different channels available for your users to ask for help as and when needed. But keep them simple, chatbots often become way too complicated to agitate the users. Instead promptly address user inquiries and ensure they have the necessary resources to succeed

Conclusion

Effective user onboarding is critical to the success of any product or service. By guiding users through the initial stages of their journey, businesses can ensure that they understand the value of what they’re signing up for and are encouraged to engage with the product or service in the long term. However, designing an effective onboarding process can be challenging. By following the best practices outlined in this article, you can create a user onboarding experience that is simple, engaging, and informative. Remember that user onboarding is an ongoing process, and it should extend beyond the initial signup. Regularly engage users with relevant updates, new features, and educational content to promote long-term adoption and retention.
